JumpCloud's custom device attributes enable you to create and store additional data about your devices beyond the standard system properties (like OS or hostname). You can use these custom attributes to automatically assign devices to dynamic device groups based on specific organizational needs or asset tags.
Creating and Managing Custom Device Attributes in the Admin Portal
You can create and manage custom device attributes directly in the device object in the Admin Portal. Attribute field names must be unique.
To add a custom attribute to a device:
- Log in to the JumpCloud Admin Portal.
If your data is stored outside of the US, check which login URL you should be using depending on your region. If your organization uses LDAP, RADIUS, or requires firewall allow list configuration, the Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) will also be region specific. See JumpCloud Data Centers for the URLs, FQDNs, and IP addresses.
- Go to Device Management > Devices.
- Select a device from the devices list.
- Click the Insights tab.
- From the Summary subtab, scroll down to Custom Attributes.
- Under Custom Attributes, enter the following:
- Attribute Name - contains a string defining the attribute’s display name. The name string must be fewer than 32 characters, must be unique, and can only contain letters and numbers, no special characters
- Attribute Value - contains a string to insert the attribute’s value. The Value string has no character restrictions
- Click Add Attribute.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
Using Custom Attributes with Dynamic Device Groups
When configuring dynamic device groups, you can use custom device attributes as part of the group's membership conditions. The attribute names and values in your dynamic group rule must match exactly (including case) with the custom attribute values you defined on the individual devices.
See Configure Dynamic Device Groups to learn more about creating attribute-based rules.
